Battling Vikings tame Tish

St Ishmaels 1 Hakin United 2 HAKIN United celebrated reaching the Senior Cup final with a hard-fought win at arch-rivals St Ishmaels.

The Vikings' cup form continued despite being down to a bare 11 players that included manager Colin Fawcett between the sticks.

Tish will be bitterly disappointed not to have tested the stand-in keeper more during a first-half that saw the sides go into the break all square at one apiece.

Marc Devonald's men did take the lead through Tom Carrington after 20 minutes but failed to build on their advantage and eventually paid the price.

Carrington closed in on Fawcett and, although the keeper got a hand to his strike, the ball found the back of the net.

But Hakin were level with 35 minutes on the clock as Aaron Owens showed why he has quickly become one of the league's top strikers.

Daniel Lincoln's cross was deflected into Owens' path and he calmly picked his spot for the equaliser.

Andrew Postlethwaite's arrival prompted a re-shuffle in the Hakin pack during the second half with Fawcett coming off and Adrian Devonald going in goal.

But the winner owed much to a striker finding himself in the unfamiliar situation of defending.

Tish's Adam Davies had tracked back but got caught under a high looping cross and handled the ball in his own box.

Referee Steve Williams spotted the offence and the penalty was awarded. Nigel Armstrong took responsibility and found the back of the net despite Jon Pawlett's valiant efforts.

Tish now face a battle to keep third place as both Hakin and Milford United close in.
