Swifts bounce back from cup defeat

From the archive, first published Thursday 23rd Mar 2006.

Monkton Swifts 2 Tenby 1 THIS was a game with permutations at both ends of the table and it was the champions who dug out an important win.

This was not vintage-Swifts by any stretch of the imagination but Benno Jones' men know they just have to keep winning and the championship trophy will stay in Monkton.

The Swifts had thumped Tenby at the Clicketts earlier in the season but with the visitors fighting for survival, this game was always going to be more difficult.

And so it proved as the champions took a slender one goal lead into the break.

No prizes for guessing that it was ace marksman Stephen Davies who opened the scoring. Paul Lowe headed into the path of Davies and he nodded past the advancing Lewis Hurlow.

The game remained pretty even with the five-man Tenby midfield harassing and hurrying the Swifts at every opportunity.

But the game looked dead and buried when the Swifts made it 2-0. Dean Driscoll ghosted into the area and met a cross perfectly to glance the ball beyond Hurlow.

That could have opened the floodgates but to Tenby's credit they fought for all they were worth and gave the Swifts a tricky last ten minutes.

Luke Askew burst into the box and fell under the challenge of Richard Hughes.

Referee Dai Barker pointed to the spot and Bobby Briers did the rest from 12 yards. There were a couple of tricky moments for the Swifts but they held on and with the finishing line in sight, another couple of wins will see them crowned champions again.
